4 Movies You Should Watch Before Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania comes out in just under a month, February 17th, and there are some movies you need to see first. Scott Lang has a fairly short resume in the MCU, and as a result the entire list will take less than 10 hours to watch. Whether you are a seasoned MCU veteran or someone brand new looking to check out Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, this list will get you up to speed.
1. Ant-Man (2016)
The introduction to Scott Lang is the most crucial movie to watch before Ant-Man 3. If you had to pick one movie to watch before seeing Quantumania, this is the one. Ant-Man’s origin story is awesome, and the movie that follows is quite good. With an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is the lowest ranked movie on this list, but it’s a really solid film.
The movie itself provides valuable background information on our main protagonists, who will play large roles in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Dr. Hank Pym is introduced in this movie, and without his technology, Ant-Man doesn’t exist. Cassie has a small role in this movie, but she should be much more important in Quantumania. We also get introduced to Hope van Dyne, and while her role is also reduced, she becomes a major protagonist only one movie later.
2. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Just as Ant-Man is the most crucial movie to watch, Civil War is the least important. Scott Lang is only in this movie for a handful of scenes, and he plays almost no role in this movie. He does have a couple of memorable moments, but they are minimal. Luckily, this is a really good movie that provides a ton of valuable information about the MCU as a whole. The movie received a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and is one of the highest rated MCU films to date.
3. Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018)
Ant-Man and The Wasp, otherwise known as Ant-Man 2, is the sequel to Ant-Man and our introduction to Hope as The Wasp. The sequel builds on the style of the first one with a second superhero added to the cast. The movie is funny, full of cool tech, and has a really cool villain. It has received an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and leads directly into Ant-Man Quantumania.
There’s a ton of information revealed in this movie that directly impacts both our characters and the small world that Ant-Man exists within. Ant-Man and The Wasp builds on our characters, more specific details and storylines compared to Ant-Man. It’s a solid movie that is a must watch before seeing Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.
4. Avengers Endgame (2019)
Avengers Endgame provides more background knowledge on Ant-Man, the state of the MCU, and a whole bunch of other heroes. It’s a great movie, running with a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, but at 3 hours long, it is a time consuming watch. Ant-Man plays a decent role in this movie, but the Pym technology does even more. Scott’s role in Endgame bridges some of the gap between Ant-Man and The Wasp and Quantumania, and we get to see more humour from the unlikely Avenger. Again, not a massively important movie to watch before Quantumania, but it does provide valuable information on how we got to where we are.
5. Loki – Season 1 (2021)
Loki talks a lot about time travel and things of that variety, and it introduces Kang to the MCU. There is nothing in this show that directly connects to Ant-Man YET. We expect to see Kang in some capacity within Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, but there is no guarantee. If you have extra time before Quantumania, this is a quick show to check out. It’s a pretty good show, and even if nothing from Loki becomes relevant to Ant-Man, you haven’t wasted your time.
All in all, the two Ant-Man movies are must-watches to understand Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. The third movie in the series promises to be full of adventure, and knowing all the background information on our characters is going to be very important. The list is fairly small due to Ant-Man being a fairly contained character, but it’s part of his charm and why so many people love him. Also Paul Rudd is fantastic in this role.
