Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves Review: Always Ask All The Questions

Now that Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is now available for streaming, I have to say that this movie was quite entertaining and right up my alley. I think the greatest strength of this movie comes from its incredible world-building. The setting brought this movie to life, and the references to different locations within the Dungeons & Dragons world were great.

If fantasy movies, in the likeness of Lord of the Rings, is something that you enjoy, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves should be a very fun watch. The whole experience was fun and worth a watch.

So, to get into specifics, I’m going to start with the plot. In essence, the whole story is about reuniting a family. This, in and of itself, is quite simple, which means that there were some very obvious twists along the way.

As I’ve mentioned in previous reviews, a simple plot isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Instead, the simple plot leaves things open for some more important aspects. In the case of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, I think the world-building and setting were a lot more important.

Now, the way Honor Among Thieves tackled this style of plot was quite interesting. I like the idea that Edgin, who acts like an adoptive father, is trying to save his daughter from Forge. This angle was nice since it gave some great character interactions. Now, the majority of the movie is mainly spent on the journey the characters faced while on the road.

This whole journey felt reminiscent of an actual Dungeons and Dragons campaign, or a fantasy game plotline. As an enjoyer of this genre, I liked all the obstacles and trials the characters faced on their way to save Edgin’s daughter. It was just a fun and exciting experience.

Now, speaking of characters, the cast definitely grew on me throughout the movie. Right off the bat, Holga was one of my favourites. Her straightforward and no-nonsense personality was a great contrast to Edgin and Forge, who mainly used their speech to attain their goals.

Watching her fight off many foes was a highlight of this movie. Now, this doesn’t mean that she was all brawn either. There were a few scenes that showed a softer and more mature side of her, which added to her character and made me enjoy her character a lot more.

On the flip side, I can’t say I liked Edgin all that much. Yes, he had some redeeming moments, but it wasn’t enough for me. I’m not exactly sure what it was about him, maybe it was his personality, but I didn’t really like him. Now, a character that definitely grew on me was Simon.

In the beginning, his lack of confidence did bother me. It wasn’t unbearable, but it was there. After Simon got over himself, I have to say the confidence and power he showed near the end of the movie was refreshing and gratifying. The final member of the party, Doric, was fun as well. I liked her interactions with the group and how she came to respect them.

Before I move on to the setting, I do want to mention that the action scenes were pretty good. The chase scene with the dragon was tense, and I liked the creative solutions the characters came up with. Besides the chase scenes, I have to say the swordfight choreography was fluid and satisfying to watch. You could feel the weight of each blow and each strike moved flawlessly into the next.

Now, the final areas I want to discuss are the setting and worldbuilding. In my opinion, this part was definitely the best part of the movie. The setting was varied and beautiful. From the iciness of the prison to the grandeur of the arena, to even the forest, it truly felt like you were in the world.

I also liked the small details in the backgrounds that helped this immersion. I like seeing all the different species interacting with each other. I liked the references to other places in the world. Now, if I played Dungeons and Dragons, I’m sure that I would enjoy the references a lot more. Even without this knowledge, I do like how this all contributed to the setting. Overall, it was fun getting immersed in this world.

So, to wrap things up, if you are someone who likes fantasy-type entertainment, then this movie should be fun to watch. Everything flows quite nicely and the world feels very alive. The fights are smooth, and the plot is easily digestible. Definitely give this movie a shot. It was a fun watch for sure.
