Review
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a movie that I was looking forward to as I enjoyed the first film and always liked the games when I was younger. Full discretion, I did see this film in French so I can’t say much about the voice talent except that the French dubbing was not too bad.
I found this film to be quite enjoyable and I would probably say I enjoyed it more than the first film. I felt this film had a really fun adventure vibe to it and I liked the globetrotting nature of the movie as we did travel to many locations. The characters were quite good with Sonic still being funny and innocent and Dr. Robotnik was also quite funny and his new look in the film made him look even crazier. The two new additions of Tails and Knuckles were both welcome as they brought fun new interactions with Sonic and the rest of the cast. This did remind me of the Sonic game I had on my Gameboy and even though I am not the biggest Sonic fan there were plenty of references that even I recognized. To talk about the story a bit more in this film Sonic and his new friend Tails have to race against Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles to find an emerald that grants power. We get many funny scenes in this film and one aspect I want to compliment is the action. I felt that the action scenes in this film were really creative and utilised the characters’ powers quite well. Particularly, the fights between Sonic and Knuckles were really cool visually and fun to watch. I thought the big third act battle was also quite enjoyable and we got to see a cool team up with the characters that were something I hoped we’d see in this film. I only have one big negative for this film and that’s the fact that Sonic is just so powerful that some of the problems he faces in the film he should be able to solve with ease. Without spoiling anything there are times in this film where if Sonic just used his superspeed he would be able to fix things or defeat the enemies before they had a chance to think. He’s the fastest being in the universe. I know that’s a problem that happens in a lot of films with superpowers so it doesn’t bug me much I just noticed it in this film. This film also moves at a quick pace and so it does keep you engaged and by the time it was over it felt like it hadn’t been that long. This movie does also have a setup for future sequels that makes me excited.
All in all, this was a fun entry in the Sonic series and it is a film I would happily watch again. So, head out to the theatre and check it out.
