As with any Mario game out there, Super Mario Odyssey is another wonderful game under the Mario umbrella. This game features so much packed into a wonderful game to play alone or with a partner. The main concept of this game is to explore different worlds, all with their own specialties and unique creatures.

Alongside the titular hero is Cappy, the replacement for Mario’s cap and a wonderful side character. With the help of Cappy, Mario embarks on another adventure to save Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser. This time, the added benefit of stopping a wedding and rescuing Cappy’s kidnapped person as well.

When it comes to the story of Super Mario Odyssey, I can’t say that the story is something grand and intricate. It’s just the same story as all the other Mario games; save Peach. This one has the added benefit of Cappy. With the introduction of this side character, Cappy also has someone who they want to save. This adds another layer to the simple story, which helps flesh out the world just a little bit more.

The other aspect that fleshes out this game has to be the unique worlds you visit through the Odyssey, the ship that takes you to new areas. From the Cap Kingdom to the Sand Kingdom, to even New Donk City, each area has its unique characters and challenges. I especially like how big and expansive New Donk City is.

Not only is the surface huge and expansive with many things to do, but it also features an underground part and many unique sub-areas. Honestly, every Kingdom has many secrets and sub-areas to explore. Each world is a breath of fresh air, and it has a lot of replayability, which is very important in a game like Super Mario Odyssey.

Now my favourite aspect of this game besides its unique world design was the movement options in Super Mario Odyssey. Being a 3D Mario game, the closest comparison I can make is with Super Mario 64. In that game, you had the ability to jump, wall jump, triple jump, and even backflip. When it came to Super Mario Odyssey, most of those techniques returned.

So, once again, you could triple jump, standard jump, wall jump, and backflip. Along with standard movements, there’s also crawling and rolling. Rolling is especially useful for travelling long distances quickly.

Now, the best part of this game is Cappy. With Cappy as part of the team, you can employ a few extra techniques on top of what’s already there. With Cappy, you can have a Cap Bounce. Essentially, after throwing Cappy in front of you, if Mario touches him, you get an extra jump. This extra jump helps in so many different situations and it helps make some crazy jumps that seem impossible. It’s an easy system to learn, but it is one that’s hard to master.

Talking about techniques in this game, I feel like it would be a great disservice not to mention the biggest mechanic of the game, the capture system. The most unique system in the history of Mario creates such an interesting mechanic.

Have you ever played Mario and thought to yourself, what if I could become a Goomba? Well, with the capturing mechanics, you can become one by throwing Cappy at them. And with that, you are now a Goomba. This whole system gives the player so much versatility to play the game. There are so many different kinds of captures in this game that the gameplay becomes very unique.

""

Besides Goombas, you can capture frogs, people, hands, Chain Chomps. The list is endless. Through this system, the most unique Bowser fights happen too. You use his wedding hat, which is equipped with boxing gloves to throw hands with Bowser, literally. It’s just a unique experience, and it’s so much fun.

Super Mario Odyssey also features a co-op mode as well. Those familiar with Super Mario Galaxy will remember that in that game, you could point the cursor to different areas to fire star bits. In Super Mario Odyssey, the second player gets to control Cappy. With this, the second player will control the direction of cap bounces and even what creatures Mario captures. This mode also has interesting techniques for speedrunning, if that’s something you are interested in.

Now, the only downside of this game has to be the camera. With all the unique movement options, and the freedom to move any way you want, the camera can sometimes get locked in certain positions. This can prove annoying since the locking of the camera prevents the player from seeing certain angles to perform jumps. Along with that, the camera also moves erratically when it decides to snap back to the front.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is one amazing game. Not only is there so much to do in the game, but the actual mechanics also provide an easy-to-learn and hard-to-master model. From there, the player has ample opportunity to learn these new techniques. Along with the capturing and Cappy mechanics, there is always something new and unique to try. Even though the game is a few years old to this point, it still holds up to this day.
