Werewolf by Night is a new Marvel “Special Presentation” that is highly stylized, creative and a wonderful homage to old monster movies. If you want to see a new side of the MCU that can go dark and scary check this out.

a fan of horror films as you may know from previous reviews I have written in the past. In general, I am easily scared and jumpy when I watch horror movies so when this was first announced I didn’t know how scary Marvel would go. Upon seeing the trailer, I realized they were going for a more old-school 1930’s monster movie including all the cheesy aspects. This is also Marvel’s first “special presentation” so it did pique my interest. Having now seen Werewolf by Night I can say I quite enjoyed what this film did and it was truly different than anything I had seen Marvel do before. To start I found the atmosphere created by the use of black and white, the gothic imagery, and just the pacing really made me feel like I was watching an old monster movie. I got the creepy vibes and while this is not scary in any comparison to horror films it is pretty scary and gruesome by MCU standards. They really went all out into the theming and I appreciate that. I also appreciated the use of practical effects on the monsters and the sets as it again made it have that retro feel as well as just looking aesthetically pleasing. Our characters are enjoyable to follow through with this special only being about 50 minutes there is not much development but Jack is a really innocent character in this group of monster hunters and he is just trying to help out a friend. Elsa brings some angst to the cast and she is definitely a greyer character than the other hunters. Ted is the absolute standout who I found to be funny just for his inclusion and impact on the story. The story moves at a quick pace and the ending does feel a bit rushed so I wish it was like 10 minutes longer just so it didn’t end so abruptly but otherwise it was enjoyable.
So yeah, it’s a short special so I am not going to write 1000 words on it or anything but if you like old monster movies give this a watch, or if you like to see the MCU do new and different things definitely check this out.
